Hello everyone,

Just to update you all, I've been elected to be the International Student Representative on the JCR committee for the hall, elections were held last week and announced last thursday at the founders day dinner. The founders day dinner was a lot of fun, it was a formal affair, with the warden and a member of the Cripps family giving speeches, and good food. There was lots of pomp and circumstance, and i thouroughly enjoyed it.

School is going well. I'm a little nervous, because my group is leading the seminar next friday for Rise of The West, but i'm sure it will be fine.

It's been lush and rainy here lately, and it's definitely getting colder. I love every minute of it.

I think today I'm going to study, take a walk around the lake, and play some cards with the boys.

hope you're all doing well, i send all my love,

Kate

10:47 pm - A day in the life:
Today was long, but good.
I went to bed at 3 last night, and had to wake up at 7:30, so i was delirious all day.
I went to go change my Rise of the West seminar time early-early, and my tutor for that is a really really nice man. we talked about what it was like to be an American student here, how Nottingham is the British equivalent of an Ivy-League University, and Chelsea Clinton, and anti-American sentiment. anyway, i'm looking forward to my Rise of the West seminars now.

My Intro to Art History Lecture was a little strange...we talked about the methods of looking at objects and art, and not jumping to conclusions before you take in all the information. After the first lecture segment indivdual groups presented their objects, what they thought about them and what they saw in them. The objects ranged from the painting of Whistlers Mother to a Coke bottle. My group did a wooden box that i had from my job at the import store, with a frog on it.

This afternoon i had a really nice long nap, while listening to the Penguin Cafe Orchestra and the rain outside.

Tonight i watched Robin Hood: Men in Tights with some of my friends, they hadn't seen it and it was high time. It had a special meaning this time around, as i'm in the heart of Robin Hood country.

I was stressing out about an essay i had to write for my Learnign History class, but i forgot that 600 words is nothing and that i already had half of it written. I made an obscure connection between environmental degradation and the fall of the Mayan Empire, and i hope they know what i'm talking about. I finished the essay in about 20 minutes, and i'm feeling very productive.

So far my biggest culture shocks have been the pants-trousers conversion, i keep saying pants and everyone thinks i'm talking about underwear, and i think meat flavored crisps are strange (i cant get used to saying crisps either) and i say yogurt whereas everyone else says it like yaag-urt.

It's getting chilly already. autumn is in full swing, the trees are dropping their leaves, and i'm drinking lots of tea and eating lots of Jaffa Cakes (mmmmm).

life is good.

hello family and friends, i think it's definitely time for me to update you all on how my life here is going. I've been here for three weeks, and there's lots to tell.

International week was a lot of fun. I met people from all of the world-egypt, jordan, hong kong, new zealand, india, brunei, canada, argentina, mexico, china....
there were lots of activities we could participate in that week, like a multicultural talent show, salsa dancing, and lots of campus tours and things like that. I felt shy and homesick during international week, so i spent a lot of it walking around the lake, and decorating my room.

on Sunday the home students got here, and all my shyness dissappeared. I became friends with all the people in my block instantly-everyone here is so friendly and nice and interesting, it's perfect. i feel like i've known these people forever, we're quite close.

Week one had businesslike elements to it-health centre registration, getting shots, registering for seminar times and attending introductory meetings, but mostly it was a lot of partying. i went out with my fellow F-blockers every single night, and i had a blast.

Last week the actual classes started--I'm taking Learning History and Intro to Art History, which are compulsory, as well as The Birth of Europe and The Rise of the West for my history modules, and 19th Century Photography (which i LOVE) for my art history module.

I love it here so much. i fit perfectly in this country, i'm already learning loads and being given challenging but manageable assignments. I love the weather, i love the people...i don't love the hall food so much, but i'll survive on it.

I'll be updating this more regularly from here on out, so check back!
much love to you all.

8:50 pm - Nottingham University
hello everyone!
sorry i haven't updated this recently, life has been a little crazy lately. i'll be updating this more regularly now that things are more in swing.

I was accepted to 5 out of 6 of the colleges i applied to (all but kingston, which never replied one way or the other) and spent some time deliberating about which to accept. the guidance of my cousins and common snese guided me to accept Nottingham University.

Nottingham University is ranked 14 on the list of the 100 best colleges in england. it's situated outside of nottingham city on a big beautiful campus, which has a lake, and gardens, and much much more.

I'm excited to be learning History and Art History in the home of the Robin Hood legend and lots of english history.
While there i will be staying in the halls of residence, on a meal plan. My Hall is Cripps Hall.

everything has been coming together. My mom and i took a trip down to LA last week to visit the British Consulate and speed up my Visa application. it was fairly straightforward, but by a crazy fluke they didn't have the actual hard copy visas in stock, so they had to mail it. I just recieved it today, and it's such a joy and a relief to see it in my passport.

My Laptop computer, which my gramdmother bought for me and which my cousin Joe and a friend of the Family, Ken Hill, helped pick out for me, just arrived today. It's at my grandomothers house, so i haven't seen it yet, but i'm very excited that it's here. everything is coming together well.

I leave in two weeks, on the 7th. My Mother and i are going to spend a few days in London, a few days in Nottingham or the surrounding country, and then I attend the "Freshers Fair" for a week, and then school actually starts.

Its hard to believe all this is really happening. I decided that this was where i was going to try to take my life about 6 months ago, and it hasn't quite settled in that it's actually happening.

thanks to everyone who has given me support along the way. not to sound cheesy, but i definitely could not have done this without you all.

I got into Nottingham!
this is one of the top schools in the country, and while i'm still wanting to hold out for a school in or near london, it's a great ego boost to get into a school like that, and it's also nice to know that i've got options.

love you all!

1:54 pm - On my Way!
Hello, and welcome to my online journal!

I've been planning of doing a blog for my family for awhile, and now i feel justified in starting one up, as i recieved my first acceptance from a university today!

This morning when i woke up, the first thing i did was check the UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, the central application service for applying to higher education in the UK) Track website to see if i had been accepted. I've done this every morning since i sent off my application, and today it finally payed off.

I've been accepted to The University of Northampton, which is located just north of the Greater London Area. This is my 3rd or 4th choice school, and i expect positive responses from the other Universities I've applied to. However, this means that i am definitely going to england in a few months. I'm extremely excited.

Now i've got to work on the million little things i have to accomplish before i leave, most notably getting my Student Visa and a plane ticket, as well as packing up my life into a suitcase and a backpack.

here's a Map of the UK ) so you can see where northampton is.

I'll let you know as the decisions come in, cross your fingers for Kingston or London Metropolitan, as those are my top choices.
